Christ Our Wisdom: Resting in God’s Good Purposes (mini-retreat)
“And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption…” 1 Corinthians 1:30 (ESV)
As shared in our last post, rest isn’t a luxury—it’s wisdom. God remembers your frame is dust (Ps. 103:14), and He kindly invites you to pause. We ignore it to our peril.
While extended retreats are valuable, sometimes we need something simpler. That’s where mini-retreats come in—short, Scripture-rich guides to help you reorient your heart amidst full days. Each features a Bible passage or song, reflection questions, and ideas for personal or shared use. Whether you have 10…30…60 minutes, these resources offer space to breathe, worship, and reset.
Today’s mini-retreat centers on Christ’s wisdom. Grab your Bible and a quiet spot—and come rest in Him.
May the wisdom of Christ strengthen your heart so that you may walk by faith in the One who sees, knows, and loves you completely. You are not alone—you are His.
1. Prepare Your Heart (5 minutes)
Before beginning this retreat, take a few minutes to listen to the song and settle your heart. Another option is to view the lyric video. Is there a line or stanza that fits you now?
When you’re ready, open your time in prayer. Use the following as a guide to get you started, if you wish.
“Lord Jesus, You are my wisdom. I bring You my (burden, question, or area of confusion). I confess my striving to take control by ____________. Quiet my heart and help me trust You. You are God—and I am not—and that is good news.”
(This time of preparation, especially if you are in the middle of a busy day, can help you settle into this time so it doesn’t just become a mental exercise.)
2. Reflection (20 minutes)
After you’ve listened to the song, scan the following to choose one stanza to reflect on. You can always return another day if you’d like to reflect on all of them.
Stanza 1
“Christ our wisdom, we are humbled
When You hide Your ways from us
You have purposes unnumbered
Each one good and glorious
Help us trust when we grow weary
Free us from our anxious thoughts
Give us grace to see more clearly
You are God and we are not”
1. What does this stanza reveal about who God is and how He works?
Consider Isaiah 55:8–9. How does this truth about God’s higher wisdom confront your desire for clarity or control?
2. What part of my life or ministry feels confusing, hidden, or out of reach?
Where do I find myself growing weary or anxious because I cannot see what God is doing?
What truth highlighted in this stanza encourages me to trust Him? What prayer do you need to pray in this area?
Pray or Journal:
“Lord, in this area of ________________, I confess I want to understand and control. But You are God, and I am not. Teach me to rest in the mystery of Your wisdom and to trust that every hidden thing in Your hand is still good and glorious.”
Stanza 2
Christ our wisdom, be our gladness
When we fail to understand
You ordain all joy and sadness
To fulfill Your perfect plan
Help us know You rule with power
Over every raging flood
In our most uncertain hour
You are God and we are loved
Reflection Questions:
1. What is God revealing about Himself here?
Consider Romans 11:33–36. His wisdom governs all, even what feels senseless to us.
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!”
2. What current sorrow or joy do I struggle to see as part of His good and wise plan?
Where am I asking “Why, Lord?” right now? What flood feels like it might overwhelm me? How might God be inviting me to trust in His sovereign rule?
4. What does this stanza remind me about God's love?
How do I usually connect God’s love to my circumstances? What if love means His wise presence, not just pleasant outcomes?
Pray or Journal:
“Lord, in this place of ________________, where I feel overwhelmed or uncertain, remind me that Your purposes are not random. You rule with power and love, even when I don’t understand. Help me trust that both joy and sorrow flow through hands that are always wise—and always for my good.”
Stanza 3
Christ our wisdom, we will follow
Though the way ahead is veiled
As we journey through the shadows
Grant us faith where sight has failed
Help us cling to Your commandments
Strengthened by Your faithful Word
We will never be abandoned
You are God and we are Yours
1. Where am I being called to walk by faith, not sight?
What decisions, relationships, or fears feel unclear? What would it look like to follow anyway?
2. How might I better cling to God's Word in this season?
Psalm 119:105 tells us “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” What promise, command, or truth has God brought to mind lately? How might that guide me in this situation?
3. What does this stanza remind me about belonging?
How does knowing I belong to Him reframe my uncertainties?
Pray or Journal
“Lord, as I face the unknown in ________________, I confess how tempted I am to walk by sight. Strengthen my faith to follow when the path is unclear. Help me cling to Your Word, obey even when I’m afraid, and trust that I will never be abandoned—because I am Yours.”
Stanza 4
Christ our wisdom, we adore You
For the beauty of the cross
Once in foolishness we scorned You
But Your blood has ransomed us
Help us sing the endless mercies
Of Your humble heart to save
Christ our wisdom, Christ our glory
You are God forever praised
1. What does this stanza reveal about Jesus and the cross?
Reflect on 1 Corinthians 1:18–25. What the world called foolish, God used to save.
“Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God…”
2. Where do I still struggle to adore Christ as my wisdom and glory?
Are there areas where I still resist His ways or prefer my own understanding?
3. Which lyric stirs my heart to gratitude?
How has Christ’s mercy met me recently? What practices help me keep His mercies fresh on my lips?
Pray or Journal
“Lord Jesus, in this area of ________________, I confess how often I lean on worldly wisdom instead of the cross. Thank You for ransoming me with Your blood and showing me the beauty of Your humility. Stir fresh adoration in me, and let Your mercy be the song of my life.”
Review and Transition (5 min.)
Close your time by reviewing your thoughts. Is there a short truth you can carry with you today as you return back to the work of the moment?
Take some time to wrap up this mini-retreat by thanking God for being your wisdom and rest. Personalize it by asking God to take the truth you highlighted into the rest of your work for the day.
